The perfect GT86?
Like the Mazda MX5, the GT86/BRZ was all about a 'less is more' philosophy. But unlike the hugely popular MX, the GT86 didn't seem to get away with just being a nippy, fun sports car, people seemed to expect and want a 'more is more' approach. It's possibly for that reason that it's a platform I’ve not been a massive fan of over the past number of years. However, in recent years there have been some great examples taking to the track, namely at the hands of Jack Shanahan and Adam Zalewski, I’ve been more open minded as to...
Track Day Noise Limits & Noise Testing
As with pretty much all Motorsport events, track days in Ireland have to conform to a pre-defined noise limit. The reason for this is to reduce environmental impact and to help keep Motorsport running. Local Authorities actually have the power to suppress any noise source deemed to be causing a nuisance - in other words, they can shut it down if it's too loud. It's for this reason that all cars have to be noise tested at the track before taking part in a track day, just the same as a race or rally. The noise limit is 105 decibels...
Track Day Etiquette & Overtaking Rules
Track days are unique in that they have their own set of rules and regulations, which are completely different from any other form of Motorsport or on-track activity, so we thought we'd write a quick post about track day etiquette and in-particular the rules around overtaking. A track day is a bit of a balancing act, while we want the day to be as enjoyable as possible with as few restrictions as possible we also need to ensure it's as safe as possible and to do that a few rules are required. The other thing to remember is that a...
Beginners guide to track days
So what exactly is a track day? Well, in short it’s a non-competitive, non timed, fun event that allows you to drive your own car on a proper race track. It enables petrol heads like you and I to push our cars to the limit in a safe environment, without endangering other road users or getting into trouble with the law. You’ll find driving on track an incredible adrenaline rush, it will make you a better and safer driver on the road and is a great way to spend a day with a group of like-minded people! To take part...
FEATURED: Martin Tierney's Celica 190 vvtli TSPORT
If you've been to any of our trackdays, chances are you've seen Martin Tierney's Celica 190 vvtli. This thing has done nearly as many track days as we have! Now on his 19th day, you certainly can't argue that Martin has got value out of the car! With close to 200bhp, a close ratio box and a diff, the Celica's make a great base for a track car with very few mods. However, they have a bad reputation for blowing engines due to oil starvation and as such can be picked up cheaply (for about a grand or thereabouts) and...
